Preparations for Sarau Festival 2014 in full swing

The 2014 Sarau Festival takes place on Sunday February 2nd, celebrating the Moutere region and the blackcurrant harvest – an important crop in the area. The Sarau Festival has something for everyone – interesting stalls with local food, drinks and crafts to discover, artisans to chat to, workshops to take part in and events for children – all in a spacious open setting reinforcing the country market feel of this must-do event in the Nelson-Tasman region.
Co-ordinator Jenny Leith says this combination country market and blackcurrant Sarau Festival is an opportunity to celebrate the food, art, wine, beer and crafts created in the Moutere, soak up the atmosphere and enjoy live music.
At the same time, it aims to showcase blackcurrants in many ways, with growers from around New Zealand taking part. “This festival is also an opportunity for the New Zealand Blackcurrant Industry to come together to exhibit blackcurrant products, associated health benefits, the latest scientific data on this super fruit and to share what we know with the world.”
Local chef Miles Drewery has been confirmed to do two cooking demonstrations this year. “I was honoured to have been asked to cook at the Sarau Festival again this year, it is my local and favourite festival with its relaxed country and family feel and I look forward to sharing some interesting recipes and techniques including our favourite Ingredient – the blackcurrant of course.”
Sarau Festival also offers a unique opportunity for a challenging – or gentler depending on your preference – cycle ride through private land to enjoy the beautiful landscape before returning to the festival. There’s the challenging Sujon 26km mountain bike ride as well as a 12km Gentle Cycle ride.
