It’s time to get your entry forms in for the great Moutere Valley Mountain Bike Race which will start and finish at the Sarau Festival. Registrations will remain open up to and including the day of the Festival. Local farmers open their gates for us and the race crosses diverse Moutere farmland including olive groves, orchards, hop gardens, fields of blackcurrants and boysenberries, vineyards and even pass by protected native bush areas. It is definitely a fantastic opportunity to bike in areas normally not accessible to the public!

If you enjoy getting out on your bike, and have a reasonable level of fitness come and join us on 3rd February. To register download and email us the form on the right-hand side of this page or print it out and post to us with your entry fee.

A magical opportunity for a magical ride in the Moutere. Open to everyone just for fun as well as serious competitors. Check out the route MAP.

Everyone wants to have a go at exploring the Moutere by bike but not everyone feels up to doing the Mountain bike club’s 26km cross country ride through some reasonably rugged farmland! So The Gentle Cycling Company have once again decided to mount a shorter ride over the flatter sections of the Moutere route.

The route is a loop, with a 7 or 11km option and finishes at the festival site. Cyclists will travel along quiet sealed roads, farm tracks & mown paddocks, passing through vineyards, raspberry & blackcurrant fields, hop gardens & open fields. There are some rolling hills on the road section at the beginning and the remainder is flat. This year we even have a MAP to show you this amazing ride.

Children are welcome as long as they are reasonably experienced riders. This is not recommended for children under the age of 8, and of course all children participating must be accompanied by an adult.

Do you have German ancestry or a German name? Chances are, if your German forebears came to New Zealand between 1842 and 1869 they landed in Nelson. The Moutere Inn History Marquee at the Sarau Festival  contains a display of early settlement in the Moutere Valley with interesting history panels, loads of folders and local historians on hand to discuss the early English and German settlements in the Moutere.  Bring along your questions, photographs, family trees and memorabilia, or just join us for a chat.

This marquee is always one of the favourites at the Sarau Festival so make sure you allow time to browse, and if you cannot make it to the Festival remember that the historic Moutere Inn has lots of old photos and documents on display.

The valley was also developed by early English settlers and an article about the fabulously restored Somerset Cottage can be found here.

Alongside the history panels and the family records will be books for sale (at a special festival price) tracing the important history of this valley:

“A Versatile Community – The History of the Settlers of Central Moutere” by George McMurtry
